Dublin is a compact and friendly capital with a rich literary heritage, lively music scene and an easygoing charm. Historic squares and Georgian streets sit close to the River Liffey, and the city's pubs are famous for conversation, live music and a warm welcome. It is an excellent choice for a short city break, for book lovers and history fans, and for anyone who enjoys a sociable atmosphere.

The city suits couples, friends and families alike. Days can be spent in museums and historic buildings, afternoons exploring parks and shopping streets, and evenings in traditional pubs where the music often starts after dark.

## Highlights of Dublin

- **Trinity College and the Book of Kells**: The university's library holds one of the most famous illuminated manuscripts in the world, alongside a magnificent old library hall.
- **Temple Bar**: A cobbled quarter by the river, full of pubs, music and street life. It is lively in the evening, though quieter in the mornings.
- **The Guinness Storehouse**: A museum and experience dedicated to the famous stout, with views over the city from the top floor.
- **St Stephen's Green**: A large Victorian park in the city centre, perfect for a relaxed stroll or a picnic on a sunny day.
- **Dublin Castle**: A historic complex used for centuries as the seat of government, with grand state rooms and gardens.
- **Christ Church Cathedral**: A medieval cathedral with a striking nave and a long history in the heart of the old city.
- **Phoenix Park**: One of Europe's largest enclosed urban parks, with wide lawns, woodland and a herd of deer.

## When to visit Dublin

Late spring and summer are generally the most pleasant times to visit. The days are long, the parks are green and the city is lively with outdoor events. Dublin's weather is changeable at any time of year, so pack for sun and rain alike.

Autumn can be beautiful, with cosy pubs and crisp air, while winter is cool and damp but atmospheric. The city's museums, theatres and warm bars make the colder months a pleasure, and the early evenings are full of character.

## Practical tips for Dublin

- **Currency**: The euro is used. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and contactless payment is common.
- **Language**: English is the main language, and Irish is spoken in some areas and taught in schools. You will rarely need any other language.
- **Getting around**: The centre is compact and walkable. Buses, trams and taxis cover the wider city, and the coast is easy to reach for a day trip.
- **Local customs**: Pub culture is central to life in Dublin. It is customary to buy a round of drinks when you are in a group, and conversation with strangers is welcome.
- **What to pack**: A waterproof jacket and an umbrella are essential, along with comfortable shoes for walking on cobbled streets.
